july & August Workshops

Upcoming Workshops

GUN DOGS

I would like to clarify that this workshop is not a workshop to train your dog to do field work. It is a workshop to build skills in your dog to help with the skills required for working in the field and mostly to give these breeds an outlet for their natural instincts.

If you are looking for an amazing, positive reinforcement based instructor for actual field work please contact Andy Teas https://www.facebook.com/AquaTerraKennels.

DOGS OF ANY AGE OR BREED WELCOME.  MUST BE COMFORTABLE IN A GROUP SETTING OF DOGS AND PEOPLE. NO AGGRESSIVE DOGS PLEASE.

A GUNDOG can be described as a listening and responsive dog, a teammate to their handler.  Sounds like great skills for any dog right?

The concepts of proximity, independence, thinking in arousal, disengagement, GRIT, focus, self-control, confidence, flexibility, calmness are necessities in GUNDOGS but they do not have to be working in the field to benefit from mastering these concepts.

This workshop will be specifically geared towards all of the sporting breeds, but any dog who loves to retrieve may attend . . . retrievers, spaniels, pointers, setters, poodles.  Like minded dogs and handlers getting together to play breed appropriate games with this amazing group of canines.

LOOSE LEASH WALKING

No prerequisite. Any age. Must be comfortable in a setting with other dogs and people.

Did you know that there are basically three components to LOOSE-LEASH WALKING?

1) Engagement with the handler

2) Disengagement from distractions

3) Calmness

Did you also know that all three of these components can be grown through game play with your dog?

This workshop will help you and your dog to grow skills to help you deal with the environment you find yourselves in when you are out for a walk.

CHASE

Do these behaviors describe your dog?

*actively seeks out chase opportunities, will run after most anything, anytime, anywhere

*chasing may begin with some stalking, or scanning

*likes to hunt & search for things

*they go into arousal in the environment of a previous chase

*their chase drive is directed to more than one target ie. a cat, bike, car, rabbit

*they look like they are having the best time of their lives

Why does CHASE concern us?  Our dogs often go into a zone when in chase mode and are unable to respond to cues from us which may result in their prey or themselves being injured.

While we can’t, nor do we want to, extinguish this often hard-wired behavior, there are some things we can do to curb it or harness it.  That is what you will learn in this workshop.

RECALLS

No prerequisite.  Any age.  Must be comfortable in a setting with other dogs and people.

Why do we want an amazing recall?
-keeps dogs safe
-keeps owners happy
-keeps other dogs safe
-prevents conflicts

A non-existent recall is frustrating for sure but we have to remember that our dogs are just being dogs. Not coming back when called is not an abnormal behavior. The things that lead to their not returning are in fact very normal dog behaviors . . .sniffing, friendly, chase, etc.
This workshop will boost your dog’s ability to disengage from the environment and increase their value for being close to you.

Here is what previous attendees have said about this workshop.

OFF-LEASH FREEDOM - Saturday July 19th 10:00-11:30 -  No prerequisite.  Any age.  Must be comfortable in a setting with other dogs and people.

This is often a dream of all dog owners . . . walking with your dog in open fields, on wooded trails or beaches without the management of a leash.  This can happen, but not without first skilling up your dog to take some responsibility for making better choices in the environment.

This workshop will give your dog the skills they need to choose proximity, switch on disengagement and just simply understand where the value lies on these walks with you.
